Boyko gives autograph to a New Radiant supporter after winning the FA Cup in 2005.

Haveeru Online: In the 2005 edition of AFC Cup, Maldivian Club New Radiant reached the semi finals, achieving one of the greatest successes not only in the club’s history. But it was considered one of the most memorable achievements in the country’s football history. Despite the fact that New Radiant had the lights of Ibrahim ‘Oppo’ Fazeel, Ahmed ‘Tom’ Thoriq, Mohamed ‘Jambe’ Jameel and Sobah Mohamed in their ranks, Bulgarian player Boyko Kamenov was considered the heart of the team.

Boyko was recruited to New Radiant in 2004 by the then Head Coach Yordan Ivanov Stoikov. Boyko gelled with the team quickly and developed his skills to be considered one of the best defenders of the season. The following year under his captaincy, New Radiant reached the semi finals of the AFC Cup. A natural leader on the pitch, Boyko even contributed important goals for New Radiant during the two years he played in the blue jersey.

“2005 was a fantastic year for me, for New Radiant. New Radiant is my second home,” Boyko, who is now in his native country Bulgaria, said in an exclusive interview to Haveeru on Tuesday.

“In 2005 we did great and I am sure not only New Radiant supporters were happy, but all Maldivians who love football were happy with our team. It was the best two years I had as a professional player. I felt the love of the supporters of New Radiant and the love of the officials from the club.”

Boyko made a surprise return to Maldives by joining VB Sports Club in 2007. However, unlike his two years in New Radiant, his one season with VB was a disappointment. Even though VB had many local stars in their squad, VB ended the season empty handed.

“We had good players that time. But I think the problem was the coach [Argentine Carlos Cavagnaro]. Because of him, we could not do perform well. After some time I also got injured,” Boyko who also had spells in Singapore and Malta league said.

The 35-year-old player is now involved in a dual player/coach role with Bulgarian side Spartak Varna. The Bulgarian third tier is looking to gain promotions to the upper divisions with Boyko’s experience.

Six months ago, Boyko completed his UEFA B coaching license course and he is looking forward to getting a UEFA A license in the next two months. Despite his focus towards a coaching career, Boyko is tempted to make a return to the Maldives.

“In July 2010, New Radiant officials called me and asked me to come, but I was having a shoulder injury. That’s why I didn’t come,” Boyko said.

“New Radiant is my second home. I am sure I can give a lot to the team as a player and as a coach. My contributions will not only be limited to New Radiant but will extend to Maldivian football as a whole.”

Boyko describes the two years he played in New Radiant as “the best two years I have had as a professional player.” Boyko says it is the supporters’ love that makes him want to return to the club.

“Maybe I will come and play in the blue jersey again. I will always remember my time in New Radiant and supporters. I hope to see them again. My heart is still with the blues,” Boyko said.
